Plan Your Journey

Practical guidance from a decade in the field, so you arrive informed, confident, and excited for what’s ahead.

Will I see the Big Five when I am on safari?

The Big Five are one of the highlights of an African safari, but wildlife sightings can never be guaranteed. One of the reasons a safari is such a special experience is that the animals roam freely in their natural habitat and every game drive is unique. The reserves we visit are home to the Big Five: leopard, lion, elephant, rhino, and buffalo. Experienced lead guides and trackers work tirelessly to locate wildlife and maximise your opportunities for exceptional sightings. Many guests are fortunate enough to see all five during their safari, while others encounter incredible wildlife experiences that far exceed their expectations. Remember, a safari is about far more than simply ticking species off a list – watching a herd of elephants at a waterhole, witnessing a leopard resting in a tree, hearing lions call at dawn, or enjoying a close encounter with a family of giraffes can be equally unforgettable.

What is safari etiquette while on a game drive?

To ensure everyone’s safety and enjoyment, please listen to the lead guide or trackers’ instructions at all times. Remain seated unless advised otherwise, keep noise levels low around wildlife, avoid sudden movements, and never attempt to feed animals. Respect fellow guests’ viewing opportunities, and help us protect the environments we visit by minimising waste and leaving only your footprints behind.

How should I behave around wildlife?

You are a visitor in their home. Animals should always be given space and treated with respect. Wildlife encounters are unpredictable, and patience is often rewarded with remarkable sightings. Ethical wildlife viewing always comes before photography.

What should I pack for a Greater Kruger safari?

Neutral-toned, lightweight layers, a warm jacket for early morning drives, comfortable walking shoes for the Big Five walking safaris, and a good pair of binoculars. We send every guest a detailed packing guide once your journey is booked.

When is the best time of year to visit?

Each season is spectacular, offering something different. The dry autumn and winter months (May to September) offer the best game viewing as wildlife gathers around dwindling water sources – the bush is less dense, making it easier to spot wildlife, mornings and evenings are chilly with comfortable daytime temperatures, and boma fires are a treat. The green spring and summer months (November to March) bring dramatic skies, newborn animals, and lush landscapes for photography, with amazing bird life – though the thicker, lusher bush makes spotting game more of a challenge. It is hot during this time, so a swim after a game drive is a welcome reprieve, and evenings are pleasant for sitting outside listening to the sounds of the bush.

Is Wild Eden Escapes suitable for families?

Yes, every journey is built around the group travelling. Family safaris are paced for younger travellers, with age-appropriate activities designed to create shared discoveries, not just sightings.

What health and safety measures are in place?

Jaime is a qualified, licensed lead guide with over a decade of Big Five field experience. All safaris follow strict reserve safety protocols, and travel health guidance is shared ahead of every trip.

What about vaccinations and malaria prevention?

Please visit your local travel clinic or speak to your doctor prior to taking the trip – prevention is the best cure. Always carry any personal prescription medication in its original packaging.

How does Wild Eden Escapes support conservation?

Every journey operates within the Greater Kruger’s private reserves, whose conservancy fees directly fund anti-poaching, habitat management, and community initiatives across Timbavati, Klaserie, Balule and Sabi Sabi.

Do I need travel insurance?

Comprehensive travel insurance is strongly recommended. Your policy should ideally cover medical emergencies, emergency evacuations, trip cancellations or interruptions, lost or delayed baggage, and your personal belongings.
